Northeastern Woodlands

The Northeastern region is thought to have had the first extended contact with Europeans. It stretches from Canada down the Atlantic coast to North Carolina and west to the Mississippi River. Northeastern Indians belong to two main groups: Iroquoian which includes the Oneida Onondaga and Seneca Nations and the Algonquian which includes the Pequot, Shawnee and Wamponoag Nations. The people lived in small farming and fishing communities and grew primarily corn, beans and other vegetables. Many of the stories known such as the first thanksgiving and Pocahontas came from this region.
