Southwestern

Located mostly in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Southern Colorado, the Southwestern Indians were primarily farmers and lived in villages of varying size, though some like Diné and Apache were nomadic and were hunters, gatherers and raiders.  A number of tribes live in this area, including: Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Diné (Navaho), Pueblo, Shoshone and Ute. Over 50 nations make up this region. Southwestern Indians are most well known for their art – pottery, jewelry, clothing and baskets. Turquoise can be found in much of Southwestern Indian jewelry. The Santa Clara Pueblo is known around the world for their beautiful pottery and Zuni and Hopi carve amazing dolls called Kachinas out of wood. Each doll has a special meaning a represents something deeply spiritual.
